All incoming 9th graders should watch this video BEFORE trying to select courses for 20-21

Slater's sent to the incoming 9th grade students this is an Leo and I will be your counselor for 9th and 10th grade we are excited to show you this presentation this morning registration or course selection in any questions that you may have for 9th graders that are coming out next year so little different this year obviously has last year Raiders coming up tonight right as I would meet with your parents and I would meet with you guys individually so unfortunately this year we will have to be doing everything online so with that being said we're going to go into the PowerPoint and hopefully it will clear up some of the questions that you may have for 9th grade for next year and at the end of the PowerPoint I will have my email and my phone office phone number in case you have any questions or anything wasn't clear for you guys or your parents so make sure that you guys do listen this PowerPoint and write down any if you have any and then feel free to either email me or or call me okay so let's get started the difference is you do Own Credit you will have to have a 26 credit to graduate from high school we also have transcripts which will go into a little bit later they're they have your grades up her semester have grades GPA which basically means your GPA is something that colleges and universities look at when you're applying we do off dual credit classes credit classes you're at the high school but we do offer you have a partnership with Coastal Bend College in Alice and we do have dual credit classes that they offer that we can help you register for will go in don't have honors classes they're called pre-ap classes here at the high school and they're exactly like honors classes that there are called something different we do programs of study which we will go into a little bit later we're going to talk about your tenant because its tenants is very important and your involvement in extracurricular activities so credit this is what we were talking about a little bit ago Court Clerk classes are all one credit so all your core classes you will be in are going to be at the credit you are going to have some electives that are half a credit or interpersonal you will need 26 credits to graduate from high school and there is a foundation plan that you only need 22 credits but that's only for certain students we won't have that for everyone okay so transcripts transcripts list all of your classes that you've taken and the grades that you make per semester so you want to be on your A-game because colleges and universities will look at your grades per semester so even if you feel like you might have messed up during a six-week you can always you know help make that up with the next semester with the next six weeks or semester and then have the two semesters ever doubt and make a good year average but they do look at your semester your GPA is at the bottom of the transcript so that's how colleges will know what you ranked and what your overall GPA is at the bottom as soon as you're done with your senior year they look at your GPA and so basically this is what colleges and universities teen when you apply for acceptance that is a very very very important slide that I put it in its called braids / GPA grades and GPA start today 1 so we do rankings after semester conclude the top 10% and the top 25% are established and they don't move too much for the following school year so it is very very important that you are on your A game as soon as school starts so you want to have a very good GPA when you apply for colleges and universities cuz that's what they look at so it's really important that you guys stay on your school work and make sure that you have good grades and maintain those good grades because like I said colleges and universities look at your semester grades on your transcript credit classes freshman to take dual-credit classes at College as long as certain requirements are met okay so the educ class is 1300 is actually done on our campus with one of our teachers Miss Garza C-Class 1300 here on our campus after school and it's a nice. Day now I know some of you were like well will we have athletic or we have it's okay she'll work with you so you can also get in the summer before your freshman you know year this summer and if you want to do that you will need to get in contact with me email me or call me in at the end of this PowerPoint out I'll let you know my age my my extension here at the high school in case you want to sign up for that class and will we're going to go into that a little bit later because I know that you guys are going to have some questions about that so we're just going to continue with the PowerPoint the TSI is a test that is a test to see if you are college-ready and it is taken at CBC and you have to have a certain score in order to take certain Spartan College dual credit classes okay and there's a couple of different classes that you can take and where to go into that here in a little while to PowerPoint Progressive the English 2 EOC thousand you will not have this is a freshman because you will take starting with one as a freshman so if you don't want to take the TSI you can wait till your sophomore year and the summer to get your score for your EEOC and in the summer that's when you'll know that you if you score 4000 you will be College ready and then you can take dual-credit classes at CVS you also can have an ACT score of a 23 total with a 1998 subgroup in order to take classes at Coastal Bend College dual credit classes so those are some of the ways that you can start take the Dual credit classes however the easiest class you do not need the TSI to take that crap and there are certain classes that you can take that you don't need the TSI bit later most all dual-credit classes that are given at the high school and some that are taken at the college will be given 10 extra points each semester and added to your GPA okay you won't see these points on your report card and you need to contact us if you have a question because this yet kind of confusing and I will try to explain it the best way that I can through this PowerPoint okay so there are many dual-credit classes that are offered we have a CBC is welding history English excetera now there are some requirements that have to be met but it is each student responsibility to determine which classes you might want to take credit classes not only affect your high school GPA but they all packed and in an affect your college gpa very carefully as to what you want to take they will follow you so you can take dual-credit classes however only the classes that are comparable to Orange Grove High School here will receive the 10 extra points added to your GPA are your example so we offer pre AP u.s. History that is equivalent to dual credit history 1301 so since we offer pre-ap version and not give you 10 extra points if you take the Dual credit history at Coastal Bend College you will receive an extra points for the first semester and 10 XR second semester and 1302 just as you would receive the 10 extra points for the pre-ap class for US History semester 1 and semester 2 same thing with pre AP English 3 extra points for the semester for English 3 and 10 extra points per semester 2 for pre-ap English 3 dual-credit English 1301 if you take it at the college or even if you take it here because we do offer you will receive an extra points for 13 and 10 extra points for 1302 however those classes are not freshman-level so this is just basically information when you are a sophomore or a junior okay or even a senior because you can't take English 3 without you know basic English want probably could but we do not you need to go through English 1 English to English 3 and that's when you were like a junior you could even possibly do it in the summer before you're a junior that's what we recommend however we do not teach speech at a at a high dual credit speech so you will not receive extra point if you take dual-credit speech it's basically like if you want to take a speech at college or PE college or even an art will not receive the 10 extra points for those classes because we don't offer the pre-ap version here in our high school okay the idiocy class at you take also here at our school will not give you 10 extra point for your Jeep that's just an introduction class that you everybody has to take before they want to take dual-credit classes so you won't be receiving 10 x 10 extra point for your GPA for the beaches honors classes they're also not shown on your report card they're only added to your GPA okay very important here to attendance you will not get credit even if you pass or your classes due to more than 9 absences per semester very very important after semester hours and if you don't get credit for your class okay involvement in activities we always tell freshman especially freshman to get involved keep a resume if you are wanting to get into The National Honor Society or your college or university this is what helps make or break even if you might not have a good GPA or rank if you're involved and you're a real well-rounded students also even for scholarship we always tell you make sure that you get involved here at the high school there's all those not going to read them off but these are all the clothes that you could possibly get involved in and I'm sure they're there may be some more Club it will pop up next year but I really hope that you guys get involved in something some type of organization because you really need to have you know some good well-rounded skills especially you know because this is your last you know school year for four years of high school until you get into the real world so you know it's easier for you to start your freshman year than it is trying to write a scholarship your senior year I'm trying to think back when did I do my freshman year are you know make a notebook put it down doesn't have to be perfect but three years ago when you were what was involved in so just make sure you you know keep a resume and get involved so this is the name of the 9th grade schedule okay you have your regular schedule and you have your Advance schedule your regular schedule convinced of it is consisted of you have to have your core so this is English 1 Algebra 1 world in some type of Science and some type of Athletics PE Orban now biology or ITC is biology is the the class that we put you in you have to take you know eocs IPC is a lower level science class if you're not if you don't want to or if you feel like you are not high enough in science and you feel like you may not do very well and you need kind of a backup for your freshman year you can choose IPC okay it still is accredited still is a science credit but it won't it won't be as add biology because because you will have to take three eoc's your freshman year which is English 1 STAAR EOC Algebra 1 STAAR EOC so if you're good in biology you you you should really really register for biology if you're not that great in science I would register for ICC however there are limited very very limited spot right we are going to look at your grades and possibly your benchmark because now you didn't do star in a Grace we are going to look at your benchmark scores for for your Sciences to see where we would put you but you can go ahead choose the right the right one that you want to do however just know that we might not you might not have I can see you might put you in BIO according to your benchmark score on the regular now get this question and so I just want to make sure that you know that you can have Athletics and dance so you will have to have some type of physical education okay and you can't have Athletics can you can you band also however all obviously you can't do PE in athletics okay so if you are playing a sport you can register for athletics you can also register for band if you are in band and want to continue so basically that would mean if you are in athletics and band you would have English 1 Algebra 1 World Geography biology or IPC Athletics and band okay or PE and then that's your regular schedule who wants to be in the advanced classes it would be pre-ap English 1 which again that's an upper-level English and it will add 10 extra points for each semester for your GPA so we will be which 1 pre-ap Algebra 1 World Geography social studies pre-ap biology and or P band PE or Athletics and Beyond or just athletic so it's up to you guys but you do have to have some sort of physical education as your 5th core class choices to choose you have art which is a credit principles of Acts food and natural resources which is your add class principles of Technology Services which is FCCLA band or jazz band speech interpersonal which is half a credit of speech for semester half a credit of interpersonal second semester or vice versa however we don't really recommend but you can if you feel like you can handle Spanish one this line is very important if you're going to be for two consecutive years 9th and 10th grade the first semester of each year will count as your credit and the second semester of each year will count as your fine which means you do not have register for arts on do or you don't have to have an art credit as long as you're in band for 2 consecutive years okay so if you're in 9th and 10th grade your first semester will be marching with just your PE credit the second semester will you're fine arts because it is an art credit neither are required courses for graduation we do have a personal graduation plan and it is on our website the foundation plan is on page 10 in the Bulldog book it's the book that has the Bulldog on the front it's a white truck and it is located on our webpage and if you want to get to it you can look for it on our web page for the high school and if you want to look on page 10 that is the foundation plan K that's the plan that only certain students and they are 22 you only have have 22 credits to graduate but they are all only for certain students not for everyone everyone has to have 26 except for they have to be approved by the principal credits needed for each grade level freshman less than six credits so if you have 6 credits as a freshman and want to be a sophomore you are a sophomore with six credits if you have left he will be a freshman again Jr's you have 11 credits seniors you'll have 18 credits so that makes a total of 26 credits to graduate from high school beginning classes for different programs of study you're going to need to be in principle to add food and natural resources okay so you need to sign up for that class on the fair the next class is principles of Human Services and the next one is principles of technology and that's your computer class pathway so you can choose to take more than one of these prints of route you would like to follow those are the three different programs of study that we offer up here at the high school and they go into all other different strands of okay still Pro study we have a questers if you can follow after your freshman year on page 52 to 60 in your orange with your white book which has a bulldog on it which is high school course description they have the flowchart so K on Pace chart and it's basically the first class obviously is at the top of the flowchart is his principles of Human Services and that's 1/3 culinary arts and the top of the flow chart does a principles of hospitality and tourism for 7th and 8th grade that's a new class for your Junior High kid however if you are in human services for your for your freshman year you can take that class can also be on the top of this flowchart and you can take culinary arts as a sophomore 54 is principles of Human Services and it's for education training and if you want to go in through that route that's the the route you would look at if you want to go ahead and look at that flow chart on page 54 on page 55 is your welding you would take the principles of act natural resources in the freshman and then it kind of goes into your sophomore junior senior on page 55 those are your sophomore junior senior classes on the flowchart stick figure out of business Freshman Class natural resources and then your sophomore junior senior level passes underneath the flow chart on page 56 57 is your animal science principles of equine Junior livestock Junior your junior year livestock and your senior year and then 58 is your environmental science environmental and natural resources and you can kind of look at that that's the pathway on page 58 on page 59 play again from natural resources and then floor on the tracks again and then on page 60 is your technology which is your principles of Technology freshman year again 4 year computer programming junior year web design and Senior your practicum up info info Tech page 60 so there are endorsements and there's four of them your endorsements are math or science business and industry Arts and Humanities and multidisciplinary okay and I want you to look at Pages 1123 in your orange book go to give you examples of your skin science and basically stand Sciences you're doubling up on Sciences you're Sam Masten double up on your map industry are all of those flowchart that we just talked about if you want to follow me of those routes it would go under business and industry Arts and Humanities is basically band four years in art for four years you know that's kind of the art route a multi-disciplinary is basically you're just kind of taking classes here and there but you're ending up with 20 credits at the end of your senior year to graduate so you would be under the multidisciplinary endorsement okay so I know that was a lot in a PowerPoint I know that you he'll probably have a lot of questions I am at work Monday through Thursday from 8 to 1 however that may change according to if you would like to email me I did put down my email address and my extension for the high school phone number and extension so if you do have questions please Clark she's also at the high school beat the 11th and 12th grade counselor and we will be here for a good parents if we students coming into 9th grade who have questions we would be more than happy to
